Parents across London have been left shocked and worried after hackers claimed they’ve stolen the personal details of thousands of children from the Kido nursery chain.
The gang — calling itself Radiant — says it has accessed the pictures, names, addresses and safeguarding notes of around 8,000 children. They’re now using this highly sensitive information to demand a ransom, even contacting some parents directly.
According to the BBC, Cybersecurity experts have described the targeting of nurseries as “an absolute new low”.
What do we know so far?
Around 8,000 children’s records have allegedly been stolen.
Data includes photos, names, addresses, safeguarding notes, and details about parents and carers.
The criminals have already published a sample of 10 children’s profiles online to prove they have the data.
Staff at Kido nurseries have been informed of a breach, though the company itself has not confirmed the hackers’ full claims.
Why this matters
This is about children’s safety. The exposure of personal details and safeguarding information could have serious consequences for families, including:
Risk of scams and harassment, especially given reports of hackers phoning parents directly.
Emotional distress from knowing children’s photos and profiles have been leaked.
Financial risks if parents’ details are misused.
Loss of trust in organisations that are supposed to keep the most sensitive information secure.
Kido is being urged to contact affected families “as a matter of urgency”.
What parents and carers can do now
If you’re worried you or your child may be affected:
Be alert to scam calls, texts or emails. Don’t share information with anyone you don’t trust.
Keep an eye on your bank accounts and credit records for unusual activity.
If contacted by someone claiming to be linked to the breach, do not engage — report it to the police.
Wait for official communication from Kido about whether your family’s details are among those exposed.
Could compensation follow?
If it’s found that Kido failed to protect personal information properly, affected families may be able to claim compensation. Data breach claims often cover financial losses, emotional distress and the impact of having your personal information exposed.
