South Staffordshire Water Data Breach FAQs

In August 2022, South Staffordshire Water, the parent company of South Staffs Water and Cambridge Water, confirmed a cyber-attack. C10p (otherwise known as Clop) claimed responsibility for the breach. Clop is a Russian-affiliated crime group. Clop demanded a ransom for the stolen data, but said negotiations “broke down”. The hackers also claimed that they could change the chemical composition of the water, but stressed they were not interested in causing harm to people”. South Staffordshire Water rejected claims that Clop could poison water supplies.

The following personal data could be compromised:

  • Customer names and addresses
  • The sort code and account number used for the Direct Debit with the water company.

South Staffordshire Water has written to all affected and potentially affected customers and employees. If you have not received this notification, it is unlikely that your data was compromised in the attack
