UK drivers are facing an avalanche of parking tickets. New figures show a 24% rise in the number issued by private firms between April and June this year. That’s 4.3 million tickets in just three months. Or around 48,000 every single day.
With fines of up to £100, these tickets could be costing motorists as much as £4.8 million every 24 hours.
Why tickets are rising
The surge comes as long-promised reforms to the private parking industry remain stuck in limbo. A new Code of Practice, designed to cap fines, ban aggressive language on tickets, and create a fairer appeals system, was due to be in place by 2023.
But legal challenges by parking companies forced the last government to shelve it. A new consultation is running, but it has already been delayed. In the meantime, private firms appear to be carrying on as before.
The complaints from drivers
Motorists have long raised concerns about:
- Misleading signage, with unclear, hidden or confusing rules
- Faulty machines. With payment systems that reject coins, cards or apps, leaving drivers tapped
- Aggressive debt collection, with intimidating letters and threats over disputed fines.
- Unreasonable charges, with penalties out of proportion to the scale of the mistake.
