If you previously tried to sign up to the Co-op or Capita data breach claims and were unable to, it’s worth checking again.
Our legal partner has updated the sign-up process, making it easier for those affected by these major cyber-attacks to join a claim. If you were affected by either breach, here’s what you need to know.
Capita data breach: What’s the latest?
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has confirmed that 6.6 million people were potentially affected by the 2023 Capita data breach.
Capita provides administration and support services to hundreds of UK pension providers. In 2023, cybercriminals gained access to Capita’s Microsoft Office 365 systems, exposing personal and financial information.
In 2025, the ICO fined Capita £14 million, stating the company had failed to properly secure personal data and left it at “significant risk”. While that fine does not go to those affected, lawyers are now pursuing a group legal action on behalf of individuals whose data was exposed.
Co-op data breach: All members affected
The Co-op data breach is one of the largest UK cyber-attacks in recent years.
In spring 2025, cybercriminals told BBC News they had accessed vast amounts of customer and employee data. While the Co-op initially said there was no evidence personal data had been compromised, that position later changed.
In July 2025, the Co-op’s CEO confirmed that all 6.5 million members had their data stolen in the attack. The group behind the breach is also believed to be responsible for other high-profile incidents, including the Marks & Spencer cyber-attack and the attempted hack of Harrods.
