WHO declares talc ‘probably’ carcinogenic – What UK consumers should know

Earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified talc as “probably carcinogenic” for humans. Carcinogenic refers to a substance, agent, or exposure that is capable of causing cancer in living tissue. The WHO said there were many studies which consistently showed an increase in the rate of ovarian cancer in women who used talc on their genitals.

The problem with talc

  • Talc is a naturally occurring mineral which is mined in many parts of the world and is often used to make talcum baby powder.
  • Asbestos and talc are naturally occurring minerals, and during the mining process, talc can become contaminated with asbestos fibres.
  • When tiny asbestos fibres enter the reproductive tract, it can trigger inflammation which may cause cells to change genetically. When this happens, and these cells multiply, it can lead to ovarian cancer.

In 2023, Johnson & Johnson removed its baby powder from the global market following claims that its products were causing cancer. However, for some cancer victims, this was too little too late. Making matters worse, lawyers believe that Johnson & Johnson knew that its talc products potentially contained dangerous asbestos as early as the 1970s. Today, Johnson & Johnson continues to deny that its talcum powder products cause cancer.

Talcum powder lawsuits

In a significant move to address a long-standing legal battle, Johnson & Johnson recently made a new settlement offer aimed at resolving nearly all the lawsuits related to its talc products, including its iconic baby powder.

The pharmaceutical giant proposed a settlement worth $6.475 billion (£5.2 billion) over 25 years to compensate former customers with ovarian cancer claims.  Johnson & Johnson did not admit wrongdoing in its settlement.

Consumer champion law firm KP Law is leading the fight against the talcum powder manufacturers in the UK and has launched a group action claim. Lawyers hope to secure compensation for potentially thousands of cancer survivors in England & Wales, as well as the families of those who have passed away as a result of using talcum powder.
