There is a notebook with the word Opt out.

Opt-out claims explained

Across the UK, global corporations are being challenged through collective actions worth billions of pounds.

These cases are part of a legal system designed to return money to consumers when large companies are accused of overcharging or abusing their market power. But despite the scale of these claims, most people have no idea they could be affected.

At Join the Claim, we have published a new consumer guide explaining what opt-out claims are, how they work, and why so many people miss out on compensation.

Why this matters for consumers

Opt-out collective actions are designed to make it easier for people to receive compensation when large numbers of consumers have been affected by the same issue.

Unlike many group claims, you do not need to sign up at the start. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you are included automatically. The only time most people need to take action is if compensation later becomes available.

The problem is awareness.
Many consumers never hear about these claims at the right time. By the time compensation schemes open, millions of people who may be entitled to money simply never realise they could claim it.

In some UK cases, fewer than 1% of eligible consumers have come forward to receive compensation.

What our guide explains

Our new guide explores the opt-out collective action system in plain English and answers the questions many people have about how these claims actually work. It covers:

  • What an opt-out collective action is
  • Which types of claim qualify for the opt-out system
  • How opt-out claims differ from opt-in group actions
  • Why these cases can involve billions of pounds
  • Why so much compensation can go unclaimed
  • What happens to compensation that nobody claims.

The guide also looks at a key issue affecting the system today: why awareness is the biggest barrier preventing consumers from receiving the compensation they may be entitled to.

Opt-out collective actions only work if people know they exist

Right now there is:

  • No national alert system for opt-out claims
  • No single place to easily see what claims are active
  • No requirement for cases to be explained in language most people can understand.

When awareness fails, the consequences are real.

Compensation goes unclaimed, settlements may be reduced, and the consumers affected by the wrongdoing may never benefit from the case at all.

Join the Claim is working to close that gap by explaining collective actions clearly and helping people find official information about claims that may affect them.

This information is for general guidance only and does not constitute legal or financial advice.
