Overview

In early 2024, a breach of the Ministry of Defence’s payroll system led to the exposure of personal data belonging to current and former members of the Royal Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force. Some of those affected included personnel engaged in highly sensitive UK security operations.

Despite the severity of the attack, the MoD did not disclose how many serving personnel were affected. However, reports from the BBC and other sources indicate that the UK government suspects China was behind the breach.

To make matters worse, according to some media reports, while the breached happened as early as January 2024, military personnel were not informed until May. This means victims were not told their data had been compromised for at least three months.

What do we know about the Ministry of Defence data breach?

  • The compromised payroll system was managed by a third-party contractor. However, the MoD remains accountable for safeguarding its personnel’s data.
  • The data accessed by hackers is reported to include names and bank details, and in small number of cases, home addresses.
  • When stolen personal data falls into the wrong hands, the potential consequences can be devastating. This is especially true when the information belongs to members of the UK Armed Forces – including those whose roles require anonymity.
  • This is not the first data breach experienced by the MoD in recent years. With malicious cyber activity on the rise, more must be done to keep the people who serve our country safe.

Ministry of Defence data breach FAQs

In May 2024, news broke that a cyber-attack targeted a payroll system used by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), leading to the exposure of personal data belonging to current and former members of the Royal Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force. The system was managed by a third-party contractor, but the MoD remains responsible for safeguarding its personnel’s information.

While the full details are yet to be confirmed, the breach may have exposed sensitive information such as names, addresses, financial details, and possibly National Insurance numbers and other payroll-related data. In small number of cases, home addresses may also have been leaked.

The exact number of affected individuals was not immediately disclosed by the MoD. However, the breach includes both current and former military personnel, including those involved in highly sensitive security operations where anonymity is essential.

A group action claim allows people affected by the same issue to take action together. This strength in numbers helps stand up to big organisations. Join the Claim helps connect people with law firms so these actions have real impact.
