How to stay safe after the Renault data breach

Renault has confirmed that some customer information was accessed during a cyberattack on one of its third-party data providers. While the company says no financial information or passwords were taken, it’s understandable that many drivers will be concerned about what this means for their personal security. 

If you’ve bought a Renault or Dacia vehicle, or otherwise shared your details with the brand, here’s what you can do to protect yourself. 

1. Be cautious of unsolicited contact

If you receive a call, text or email claiming to be from Renault — especially one that feels urgent or asks for personal details — pause before responding. Fraudsters often use stolen data to impersonate legitimate companies. If in doubt, contact Renault directly using the details on its official website.

2. Watch out for phishing emails

Phishing messages can look convincing — they might use real Renault branding or refer to the data breach itself. Check the sender’s email address carefully and avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments. Genuine companies won’t ask you to “reconfirm” sensitive details by email. 

3. Keep an eye on your accounts

Even though financial data wasn’t part of the breach, criminals sometimes use partial information (like your name, phone number or address) to build a bigger profile. 
Regularly review your bank statements and credit reports, and report anything unusual to your provider. 

4. Update your passwords and settings

If you’ve used the same password across multiple sites, now’s a good time to change it. 
Enable two-factor authentication where possible — it adds an extra layer of protection if someone tries to access your accounts. 

5. Stay informed

Renault has said it is contacting all affected customers directly. Keep an eye on official updates from the company and reputable news outlets — not social media rumours.
