Morrisons equal pay case update: What store workers need to know

In a significant development for supermarket store workers, the Morrisons equal pay case has taken a major step forward. An Employment Tribunal has agreed finalised job descriptions for Morrisons shop and warehouse workers. Independent experts will now examine the tasks undertaken by staff to see whether the roles are comparable.

What is the Morrisons equal pay case about?

Morrisons pays its (predominantly female) store staff, less than its (predominantly male) warehouse workers. This has promoted an equal pay claim against the supermarket chain.

To date, over 7,500 workers have joined the Morrisons equal pay case. They believe Morrisons is breaching the Equality Act by paying its distribution centre employees more than its store workers. Lawyers representing the supermarket’s employees argue both in-store and warehouse roles require comparable skills, effort, and responsibilities, and as such, both sets of workers should receive equal pay.

Another hearing – due to start next year – will decide whether there are justifiable reasons for the pay differences.

If the workers win their case, affected Morrisons employees could each receive thousands of pounds in backpay. And it’s not only women who can join the claim. While the pay difference is thought to be linked to gender, men who work, or have worked, on Morrisons’ shop floor could also have a claim for unpaid wages.

Good news for Morrisons store workers

In a similar claim, an employment tribunal ruled that Next store staff should have been paid the same rate as Next warehouse employees. As a result of the ruling, the underpaid workers could now be due millions in backpay. While Next said it would appeal the decision, legal experts believe the ruling is good news for supermarket employees across the UK fighting similar claims for equal pay.

There are similar equal pay claims against Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s.
