Overview

In October 2025, the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) ruled that Apple overcharged UK consumers for nearly a decade through excessive App Store commission fees.

The Tribunal found Apple abused its dominant position by charging up to 30% on paid apps, subscriptions and in-app purchases on iPhones and iPads between 1 October 2015 and 15 November 2024.

The CAT said fair rates should have been much lower — 17.5% for app distribution and 10% for in-app purchases and subscriptions — meaning consumers and businesses likely paid more than they should have during this period.

The case is being hailed as a watershed moment for digital fairness and consumer rights.

It could lead to compensation for up to 36 million people in the UK. Are you one of them?

FAQs about the Apple App Store overcharging claim

Anyone in the UK who bought paid apps, app subscriptions or in-app purchases on an iPhone or iPad via the UK App Store between 1 October 2015 and 15 November 2024 will likely be eligible. UK-based businesses are also included. However, this is an opt-out claim, and if you have previously opted-out, you will not be able to join.

This is an opt-out claim. This means, if you are eligible,  you are automatically included in the group action, and could be due compensation.

However, you’ll usually need to register your details on the official claim site to receive any money you’re owed.

In other words, even though you’re automatically included unless you opt out, you may not get your compensation unless you register on the official claim site.

That depends on how much you spent during the relevant period and the method the Tribunal approves for distributing compensation. Final amounts haven’t been set yet.

Keep anything that shows your App Store spending (e.g. Apple email receipts or statements in your Apple account). The official claims site will explain exactly what’s needed.

A group action claim allows people affected by the same issue to take action together. This strength in numbers helps stand up to big organisations.

Opt-out claims work differently to other types of legal action. If you are eligible, you are automatically included in the case unless you choose to opt out. There are no costs to be part of the claim, win or lose.
